Dasra Adolescents Collaborative

10to19: Dasra Adolescents Collaborative is a high-impact platform that unites funders, technical experts, the government and social organizations to reach five million adolescents and move the needle on outcomes key to adolescent empowerment. These include: completing secondary education, delaying age at marriage, delaying age at pregnancy and increasing agency.

The Collaborative brings together key funders such as the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Kiawah Trust, Packard Foundation and USAID to support and scale domestic, adolescent focused non-profits that will provide comprehensive programming to ensure that adolescents are educated, healthy and empowered to make positive life choices.

The 10to19 Collaborative aims to drive collective action towards scalable impact on the lives of India’s adolescents. It will do this by:

  • Adopting an outcome-driven approach to improve four key outcomes for adolescent girls
  • Scaling proven approaches to comprehensive programming
  • Directing funds into adolescent health and development in India
  • Strengthening coordination with government, foundations, corporates and the private sector
  • Building a community of practice among adolescent-focused partners across India
  • Advocating to improve implementation of adolescent-focused policies and programs
  • 1
India ranks highest in adolescent pregnancies globally
  • 17%
    of girls marry before 18
  • 15%
of all married adolescent girls (aged 15-19) can take major decisions by themselves
  • 47%
of girls enrolled in secondary school
  • 18%
of girls drop out before secondary school completion
  • $7.7billion
could be added to India's GDP by increasing the age of pregnancy to 20

"Our vision is really simple. We would like every girl to have an education, to be healthy and to be safe, to have skills, have a choice about her life and the ability to make those choices."

DASRA'S JOURNEY IN ADOLESCENT
HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT

In 2011, Dasra began investing in adolescents through a research-led process, culminating in the launch of its first Giving Circle to support Educate Girls, an organization that has since scaled its impact from 125,000 children to now ensuring over two million of them attend school in Rajasthan.

In 2013, Dasra launched the Dasra Girl Alliance with USAID, Kiawah Trust and Piramal Foundation to mainstream the issue of adolescent girls and drive resources and funding into the sector. At the time, adolescents formed the most underserved group in the spectrum of social issues.

From 2013 to 2017, there has been a dramatic increase in the momentum, intent, action and resources being directed towards adolescents. Yet there remain several key challenges that stand in the way of improved outcomes for adolescents.

Analyzing the learnings highlights the need for Dasra to engineer collective action for a specific outcome or set of outcomes in a select geography by defining a unified vision, engaging multiple types of players, fostering partnerships, and supporting execution. Its ultimate aim is to drive and manage partnerships of stakeholders to deliver beneficiary-level impact. .
