Poor conditions of my own village started my journey in philanthropy: G. M. Rao

Strategic Philanthropy | May, 2017

G.M. Rao, founder chairman of the GMR Group grew up in a small village of Andhra Pradesh where he experienced rampant poverty on the ground. He started working on the betterment of his village right since he came back to his village after finishing engineering studies. Taking inspiration from his father who always used to tell him the importance of giving back to society, Rao’s organization runs multiple projects focusing on education, healthcare, vocational skills and community development in the country.

He is also inculcating the spirit of giving to next generation to maximize the impact of his initiatives. “All the family members come together, my brothers’ and sisters’ children as well – almost 160 people gather and together we contribute this money,” he says.
