Strengthening Philanthropic Giving and Impact Investing for Development in India

Strategic Philanthropy | Mar, 2016

Domestic private actors in India are supporting the work of civil society organizations and social enterprises, and they are facing challenges in doing so. There is decreasing support from international development institutions as well. Strengthening Philanthropic Giving and Impact Investing for Development in India sets forth activities and challenges, including many that are typical for private funders of philanthropic or development work in other places. It also proposes a menu of possible steps for interested donors and investors.

The report examines the ways in which domestic private actors are supporting the work of civil society organizations and social enterprises, and the challenges they face in doing so. The idea behind this research emerged from conversations among partner institutions and key actors over the last few years, especially since the enactment of the Companies Act, 2013.
